The interest for cover achieved the start of design (Pryce, 19). Hints of early residences that can be considered dependable were found for as ahead of schedule as 30,000 years prior. Metropolis and the Alloy Orchestra

Metropolis and the Alloy Orchestra [by Farre Nixon 11] Check out the Metropolis trailer! On Saturday, March 5, the Somerville Theatre was packed for a World Music Crash Arts event. There was a sold-out showing of Metropolis (1927) that I had the pleasure of attending that evening. If you have heard of or seen Fritz Langs Metropolis, then youll know that it was one of the first films ever made, which by virtue makes it agaspsilent film! You may wonder how the showing of a classic silent film could pack an entire theatre. When Metropolis and other silent films were originally shown, a large orchestra would play a score made especially for the film to accompany the visuals. What drew such large crowds for this particular screening was the fact that the Alloy Orchestra would be playing their version of the score alongside the film. Such an event is rare; even Roger Ebert was quoted saying that this would be the event of the year to attend. The Alloy Orchestra, based here in Cambridge, is composed of Terry Donahue, Ken Winokur, and Roger Miller (from the band Mission of Burma, who also played here at MIT once). Theyve created accompaniments to several classic silent films such as F. W. Murnaus Nosferatu, Dziga Vertovs Man With a Movie Camera, and Sergei Eisentiens Strike. If you happen to take film or video classes here at MIT such as The Film Experience (21L.011) or Introduction to Video (4.351), youll surely be exposed to some of these classics. Photo Credit: alloyorchestra.com Now back to the event itself. The film and music were amazing! Theres nothing like seeing a silent film on the big screen, especially when the orchestra does such a phenomenal job seamlessly integrating a modern score with a classic work. The Alloy orchestra used a synthesizer, a musical saw, and (my favorite) a junk, among other instruments to create the soundtrack. The film is a precursor to almost every sci-fi movie made, because Fritz Langs vision of utopia and its implications still resonate today. What he was able to accomplish in the 1920s in terms of set design and special effects is remarkable! Typical to German Expressionist films, the acting is over-the-top and, at some points, hilarious. You have to check this movie out, especially to see Maria, the protagonist turned antagonist, dance on stage. Her facial expressions are absolutely entertaining! It was mentioned during the introduction of the film that due to the high demand for the event, it might happen again in the fall. If you are interested, visit the World Music Crash Arts website for further details. There are a ton of upcoming arts events on and off campus! If you have a chance, stop by Harvards Carpenter Center to see the exhibition About Academia by Antoni Muntadas. It features images and dialogue concerning education at Harvard and MIT, including some interviews with Noam Chomsky and other MIT faculty.

Times of war Essay Example For Students

Times of war Essay The sweat hung heavy on Stevens cold features. He was walking as calmly as he could down the corridor. Given the chance he may have been described as handsome, but none gave him the chance and Steven didnt really want them to. He was keeping a close eye on the shadows that covered every doorway, as people who were less fortunate than him often lurked there waiting for someone to mug. Who would have thought that the Human race would have come to this? Locked in an intergalactic war that had lasted several millennia, but he was going to change that, it would be as the war had never happened and indeed if he succeeded, it wouldnt. Suddenly he stopped and gazed out of the nearest view port, he saw nothing but a thin sprinkling of stars and an awful lot of black, it was pretty much the same view he had had for the past thirteen weeks. At fist he found it awe-inspiring and then slowly that had given way to just plain dull and then very dull and then deeply dull. This depressed him greatly not because he loved to marvel at the beauty and intricacy of the universe, but because it remaindered him of his own life, stark and bleak with only a few pin pricks of excitement or hope in the near blank empty shell that was his life. He only got depressed when he was bored, bored or nervous, and at this moment it was the latter. We will write a custom essay on Times of war specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Time Travel, two little words that have caused so much conflict and so many scientists to pull out their hair and have to be put into tax exile which is the usual fate of those determined to make a fool of themselves in public. Steven didnt much like the idea of time travel, meddling in the past to affect the present it was to complicated. How could he go back in time to stop a war that was the reason that he went back in the first place, if its done it should be done the bastards should leave it alone. There was also the issue that if some thing went wrong he would be broken down into a mixture of hydrogen carbon and ozone and would then be spread to any place in the entire universe and at any point in that places history. In short he would die a horrible, horrible death. But he didnt really care his life at the moment only resembled some kind of rabbit like creature that had died and been left out in the sun to long. Dr. Simons however had a slightly more optimistic view on what was about to happen. This probably had something to with the fact that he was in no real danger as all he had to do was throw a switch and cross his fingers. Dr. Simons was considered to be the leading expert on temporal physics in the entire known universe. He had succeeded where others had failed he had created a time machine. Hes not quite sure how it happened, he was trying to create a nuclear powered toaster at the time. The idea for this toaster had hit him when a few weeks earlier he had been harassed by falling pieces of lightly browned squares of bread that had just seemed to materialise a few feet above his head and proceeded to land on him. He was even more confused when he had completed this toaster that every piece of bread that he had put into it did not come out in fact they just disappeared. He finally realised what he had created when one of his pupils, feeling rather hungry after just discovering that th e whole universe was in fact the same shape as Mickey Mouses head, had adjusted the controls on the toaster to high and had sent the bread fifteen seconds in to the future. Again above Dr. Simons head. .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af , .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .postImageUrl , .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af , .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af:hover , .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af:visited , .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af:active { border:0!important; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af:active , .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u84f5a612a6160355faaf6a386ac932af:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank- Willy Lindwer EssayAs Steven walked down the corridor it suddenly struck him that there were a great many things that he and in fact the whole human race did not know or indeed were mealy not aware of, one of the great many
